Rowan Alcock

Area Studies (2015 cohort)

I am a DPhil candidate in Politics at the University of Oxford. My research interests are China's economic transition and environmental and food issues. I previously studied an MPhil in Modern Chinese Studies at Oxford, my research involved comparing grassroots environmental groups in China and the West.

My undergraduate degree was in Politics and Economics at Essex University. As part of my two years studying abroad I studied at Peking University for a year on a full Chinese Government Scholarship. I then returned to Essex and gained a first class degree with a thesis on Chinese economic reforms and developmental strategy. After graduating, I returned to China with the British Council to teach English to senior high school students in Nanjing. My experiences in China lead me to want to expand my knowledge of politics, economics and society in a Chinese context.
