How Do I Secure a Placement?

There are three routes for securing a placement:

Before applying to an external organisation please consider carefully the placement’s duration, timing, and whether it would fulfil the ESRC GUDTP criteria. If you are uncertain, please try completing the GUDTP Placement Project Plan with the information provided in the call by the employer/host. Seek to gain any missing information through an email to the host or during the interview, if you are shortlisted. We also encourage you to liaise with students/alumni that have previously undertaken a placement with the employer/host.

We occasionally advertise opportunities exclusively developed for GUDTP students here and through our mailing list. By definition, the project plans of these placements meet Criteria 4-6. Applicants still need to go through a selection process by the employer/host and, if selected, demonstrate to the GUDTP that this is the right opportunity for them. Therefore, please consider carefully your professional development needs before applying.

Currently, we advertise GUDTP placement opportunities as they arise and we cannot guarantee the frequency nor the recurrence of placement opportunities.

You are encouraged to develop your own placement by negotiating a bespoke project plan with an organisation of your choice, with GUDTP support. This route can be particularly beneficial if you have something very specific in mind. Developing a bespoke placement presents a unique learning opportunity in its own right, though reaching out to a potential host it will involve significant time, effort, skills, and preparation. Please plan well in advance, and be mindful of the fact that you are representing GUDTP and your home institution throughout this process.

If this route seems the right option for you, please book a 1:1 meeting with the GUDTP Research in Practice and Placements Co-ordinator, Katerina Vavaliou in the first instance.
