Writing Stories That Matter

Stroytelling Skills for Social Sciences Graduate Students in the three GUDTP Universities

In this session we will use tools from storytelling to enhance how we plan and create pieces of written communication.

We’ll start with an overview of storytelling skills and the different ways they can be applied to writing.

We will then analyse examples from The Conversation, learning what works well and what doesn’t. This will involve developing how we give constructive and helpful feedback, which aims to develop a piece of writing rather than just critique it.

We will plan and develop our own pieces of written communication of around 500 words. We’ll work in pairs or small groups, supporting each other in the editorial process.

You are encouraged to bring your own material to work on – e.g. a conference abstract, placement report or blog post. If you already have a first draft, the workshop will help you edit and enhance it.

Throughout the session we'll draw on storytelling skills to enhance how we plan and write. This is to ensure our work is engaging and understandable – so it honours our research and engages our target audience. The skills we acquire in the workshop are applicable to other pieces of writing including thesis chapters, articles, and essays. It is only for practical reasons that we’ll workshop pieces of around 500 words.

If you are a GUDTP student scheduled to speak in the GUDTP Annual Conference, this will be an opportunity to rework on your abstract, before we upload it on the conference website.

Advance registration is required. Places are limited and will be allocated on a first-come first-served basis.
