This training session is delivered by Dr Will Gervais for the GUDTP
In this workshop, we will explore experimental methods in the social sciences. We will introduce a variety of experimental designs and approaches, consider their strengths and weaknesses, and work to develop a comprehensive experimental toolkit for emerging scientists.
What do we seek when conducting experiments? What assumptions do these approaches rely on? What makes an experimental manipulation good, bad, or ugly? How can we spot strong experimental work in the literature (or work we should treat with more caution)? How can researchers assess the validity of their experimental work? What can experiments reveal that cross-sectional or observational approaches cannot? How can we use experimental effects as measures of individual differences?
Focus will be practical and pragmatic, with an eye to teaching people how to do and evaluate experimental research with an eye towards robustness and validity.
