This mixed training session (presentation and workshop) is for GUDTP students getting started with their placement plans.
Delivered by Dr Fiona Whitehouse (Head of the Internship Office, University of Oxford) and Katerina Vavaliou (GUDTP Research in Practice & Placements Coordinator), this training session will cover:
- the background of the ESRC placement requirement
- the benefits of undertaking a placement as a doctoral student
- how to find and develop a placement that is mutually beneficial to you and the host
- common challenges in setting up and undertaking placements
- advice for speculative approaches to potential hosts and cringe-free networking
- training support and resources to get you started.
Following an introductory presentation on the above, we will workshop participants' placement-development plans (real or imaginary) through hands-on activities and group discussion.
Attendees will be guided in deciding their next steps by identifying potential hosts, developing a strategy for their speculative approaches, and getting that first e-mail drafted.
Equipment
Attendees should bring their laptops.
Preparatory Activities
To make the most of this session, we encourage participants to come to the session with some idea about the sector or sector(s) that appeal to them and why.
It might be beneficial to reflect on your DNA responses and discuss with your supervisor how the GUDTP placement can contribute to meeting your learning and development goals.
