All GUDTP scholars are warmly invited to present their work at our flagship annual event, the GUDTP conference.
A celebration of the excellent and innovative research conducted by our scholars, this two-day conference offers a kaleidoscopic view of your diverse range of research, methodological approaches, and the wide scope of impact. Unlike most academic conferences, which bring together experts in one singular field, or public engagement opportunities that require translating your research for a general public audience, the GUDTP conference is a unique opportunity for you to address an interdisciplinary but highly skilled and engaged audience, benefit from the fresh perspective of others, get inspired by their work, and find out how much you have in common (or not) with research across the Social Sciences. It is an opportunity to connect with your peers across institutions, departments, and research pathways; forge new collaborations and friendships.
You are all strongly encouraged to submit an abstract, regardless of the stage of your research.
You might want to have feedback on your research design, report on your early findings, address the challenges of your fieldwork, or simply practice your presentation skills by engaging others in the intricacies of your research project.
Keynote Speakers
Prof Danny Dorling
1971 Professor of Geography, University of Oxford
Prof Patricia Owens
Professor of International Relations, Department of Politics and International Relations, University of Oxford
How to Apply
To accommodate inclusivity and diversity, we are offering three presentation options and we would be more than happy to guide you in choosing the one that best meets your material and/or your personal preferences. If you are unsure which is most suitable, please contact Dr Paula Sheppard, our Research & Training Lead.
If you need a boost in confidence, please register to attend our upcoming training session Preparing for Public Speaking and Presentations (Details will be posted soon!).
Those considering presenting a poster might find attending this training session by Oxford's Department of Continuing Education or this Introduction to Designing a Conference Poster by the Bodleian Libraries useful.
Presentation Options
- 10 mins talk with a 3-5 minute Q&A
- 5 mins short talk with a 3-5 minutes Q&A
- A1 poster
You will need to submit an abstract of no more than 200 words when you apply to present, and select a talk or poster that you prefer.
Other Ways to be Involved
If you feel you are not ready to present you work, please make sure you come to support your peers. We expect all our GUDTP students to be there. You may be excused if you are in the field or at an overseas institutional visit at the time of the conference.
Registration for attendance opens on the 01 May.
Food, Fun, and Practicalities
To enjoy the unique historic environment of Oxford, we have booked three different venues for this event; The Manor Road Building, St Hilda’s College, and St Anne’s College featuring a mix of lovely gardens and architectural styles. Lunches and refreshments will be provided on both days and all attendees are invited to join us for dinner on Tuesday evening.
To avoid waste, we have a strict policy of registration with commitment to attend the banquet dinner at St Hilda’s on the 23rd. Cancellations within the last 48 hours will be charged at £50.
The GUDTP will provide accommodation for attendees from the Open University and Brunel University of London upon request. Free accommodation is not available for Oxford students.
