This two-day course provides social science PhD students with a practical introduction to quantitative research using R. Day one develops foundational skills in R and RStudio, including working with objects and data frames, importing, cleaning and transforming data, producing descriptive summaries and creating effective visualisations. Day two introduces the principles underpinning frequentist hypothesis testing and linear regression. Students will learn how hypotheses relate to statistical tests, what a p-value does, and does not, tell us, and how Type I and Type II errors arise, before exploring the theory, assumptions and interpretation of linear regression and applying these concepts in R. The course is designed for social scientists with little or no previous experience of R or quantitative methods.

Dr Page studies human reproduction, parenting, childrearing and early child development from an evolutionary and behavioural perspective. She is an interdisciplinary scientist, bringing together theories and perspectives from the Behavioural Ecology, Anthropology, Psychology, Archaeology and Demography. Her work is cross-cultural, working with both subsistence level groups across the world as well as UK based work.
